About Sands Capital:

We are a long-term concentrated growth investment manager based in Arlington, Virginia (or greater Washington, D.C. area). We invest globally across the life cycle of high-quality innovative businesses, ranging from early-stage private to leading public companies. Our investment philosophy centers around our six criteria based on our founding principles (detailed on our website www.sandscapital.com). Our strategies employ a fundamental, bottom-up research process to manage over $80 billion dollars in client assets (as of September 30, 2021).

Identified below are Core Values the firm holds in high regard and believes are critical for high-performing teams at Sands Capital:
  • Integrity and Trust: Do what is right, not what is popular. Deliver on commitments.
  • Client-Centered: Always act in the best interest of our clients.
  • Commitment to Excellence: Strive to learn and improve. Implement best practices.

About the Investment Research Analyst Role:

Sands Capital is one of the largest Technology investors in the world with extensive holdings across the Software and Internet spaces. We are looking for a Technology thought leader to join us as a member of our Investment Team. The ideal candidate has strong domain expertise in the Global Software space. Due to the growth of our firm, an opportunity has opened for a new team member to join and act as a thought leader for public software investments-finding and weighing the relative merits of great ideas across strategies, while mentoring junior team members. With an expanding private growth equity business, the Research Analyst may also spend some time leading/participating on investments in innovative private technology companies, particularly as those businesses approach an IPO (although this is likely a smaller percentage of time).

Position Responsibilities:

The ideal candidate has 7+ years of investment experience, a strong investing track record, can develop junior team members, and effectively communicate with clients. Some specific attributes are required:
  • Ability to develop deep expertise and generate differentiated insights: We are concentrated with positions sizes sometimes exceeding 10% of a portfolio. This necessitates high conviction. We often find a few differentiated insights drive long-term investment outcomes. We spend a tremendous amount of time thinking about revenues three and five years out as well as structural earnings power. This often involves creative approaches to solving complex questions.
  • Patience: Our turnover is low at ~20-25%. We make fewer, larger investment actions and typically make changes based on improving / deteriorating long-term investment cases rather than quarterly results.
  • Analyst first / Ownership culture: Senior Investment Team members are expected to make clear, decisive recommendations and take accountability for outcomes. Senior team members are not reporters "covering" a space.
  • Comfort in stock volatility: Many of our investments are in high growth businesses that inevitably have high stock volatility.
  • Mentor / Team player: We are a growth organization with strong "up and coming" talent. The ideal candidate should be able to develop and empower others.
  • Confident, articulate communicator: Senior investment team members are heavily involved in relationship development for new and existing clients.
  • Entrepreneurial mentality: Our franchise has expanded over the years and we have ambitions for future growth. This requires team members to pick up loose balls, potentially wear different hats, and opens the opportunity for career advancement if we execute.
  • Exhibit behaviors consistent with Sands Capital's mission, values, and culture

Skills and Qualifications:
  • A passion for growth investing
  • ~7+ years of industry experience, preferably on the buy-side
  • Outstanding analytical and strategic aptitude; highly motivated with a positive, 'can-do' attitude
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong work ethic, diligence, and an ability to execute at a high level without direct supervision
  • Be able to work collaboratively and effectively as part of a team
  • CFA preferred, but not required

Values for Success at Sands Capital:
  • Focus: Identify and concentrate on "what matters"
  • Long-Term Perspective: Appreciate that time allows sound decisions to demonstrate their worth. Avoid short-term thinking
  • Independent Thinking: Have the courage to develop and articulate your own convictions. Debate others openly and honestly
  • Teamwork: Collaborate to gather facts, develop perspective, build conviction, and support timely decision-making
  • Positive "Can-Do" Attitude: Demonstrate a willingness to tackle any task
  • Graciousness: Reflect kindness and courtesy at all times
  • Balance: Enjoy your work while balancing professional activities with interests beyond the firm
  • Meritocracy: Know that talent and achievement will drive your success at Sands Capital
