SmithBucklin, a 100 percent employee-owned association management company, is looking for an experienced Sr Manager, Accounting and Finance to join our 16-person Financial Management & Accounting Services (FMAS) team in Chicago. Our FMAS unit provides client organizations with a comprehensive set of financial and accounting services including monthly financial statement processing and reporting, financial review and discussion analysis, cash management, multi-currency transactions and Value Added Tax (VAT) compliance for international events. We also generate customized reports, dashboards and other tools to keep board members informed and able to make timely and effective decisions.

The Sr. Manager, Accounting and Finance will be overseeing full-service association management client organizations and report to the VP, Financial Management and Accounting Services.

What You Will Do

Financial & Operational Management

  • Maintain compliance for cash receipts, AP/AR, journal entry review, financial statement preparation and review, and monthly bank statement reconciliation
  • Ensure the accounting staff maintains financial record systems in accordance with GAAP
  • Ensure timeliness, accuracy and usefulness of financial and management reporting; oversee the preparation and communication of monthly and annual financial statements
  • Oversee budgeting and monitor progress against approved budgets; present operational metrics internally and externally
  • Oversee the preparation and approval of all financial reporting materials and metrics; prepare and communicate monthly and annual financial statements to client organizations
  • Manage cash flow, budgeting, and periodic forecasting; direct, financial, project-based and client accounting

Executive Director & Board Support

  • Prepare and review monthly variance analysis and MD&A with executive directors
  • Review monthly financial dashboards with executive directors
  • Create and analyze periodic forecasts, including cash flow forecasts
  • Prepare financial statement package and analysis for quarterly finance committee call
  • Provide strategic financial oversight to executive director's and finance committee members
  • Attend finance committee and board calls, as necessary, providing financial management and accounting support
  • Travel to annual conference and board/finance committee meetings when needed
  • Provide financial modeling and analysis when required

Team Management

  • Manage a team of accountants; perform staff reviews, train and develop
  • Oversee the financial management and accounting oversight for 15-20 client organizations
  • Review and manage the daily/monthly accounting activity for each accountant assigned
  • Maintain day-to-day relations with executive management, executive directors, and client staff teams

Accounting & Administration

  • Ensure maintenance of appropriate internal controls and financial procedures
  • Oversee client industry practices to ensure proper maintenance of all accounting systems and functionality
  • Coordinate and supervise the audit process for client organizations and review annual audits with client teams and finance committees
  • Coordinates preparation of 990 and 990T with external audit/tax firm
  • Review and approve 1099's and 1096

Planning & Policy Management

  • Ensure financial policies of client organizations are being followed and adhered to
  • Coordinate the development and monitoring of client budgets and forecasts
  • Review and ensure client investment policies are maintained and adhered to
  • Assist with and maintain relationships with client investment advisors
  • Manage RFP process for audit/tax firm when required

Strategy

  • Participate in the ongoing strategic planning process as an integral member of the senior client financial management team
  • Oversee long-term budgetary planning and cost management in alignment with SmithBucklin's Core Values and Strategic Goals of Client Organizations

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting from an accredited four-year institution
  • Approximately 8+ years of relevant accounting experience, to include 5+ years of people management experience
  • Proficiency with basic computer skills, including the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA
  • Financial management and analysis skills
  • Experience with not for profit financial management
  • Experience with Epicor accounting software
