The Role: Associate, U.S. Public Finance - Higher Education and Not-For-Profit Institutions

The Location: (flexible) Chicago, IL / Centennial, CO

The Team:
The Higher Education Group is responsible for maintaining the ratings on a portfolio of approximately 700 credits. This includes meeting regulatory review requirements, engaging with market participants, providing industry thought leadership and maintaining superior customer service as a means of maintaining or improving our market leadership. The group is made up of about 20 people and is highly collegial and friendly. We value our ability to work closely together as a team and get the job done.

The Impact:
This position is key to maintaining our market relevance and meeting our review requirements. As an Associate, you will analyze a portfolio of assigned entities as well as moderately complex situations, data, and information, assesses client's financial projections and resolves difficult deal-specific analytical situations. This position is responsible for meeting with issuers and investors on analytical matters, assisting in resolving client needs, contributing to media requirements in conjunction with senior members of the organization, and taking the lead at external meetings related to credits, as assigned by a more senior manager.

Responsibilities:
  • Act as the primary analyst for higher education and non-traditional not-for-profit bond transactions for some very well-known institutions.
  • Lead and mentor more junior analyst and provide analytic support to them.
  • Participate as an active, vocal voting member of the committee who makes recommendations to the rating committee and prepares material for ratings publication.
  • Synthesize analysis into well-reasoned and well-supported rating recommendations that demonstrate a strong understanding of financial markets and business environment and the relationship to S&P products.
  • Write deal summaries and analytical reports, contribute to thought leadership pieces.
What We're Looking For:
Basic Qualifications:
  • MBA, MPA, MPP, JD, CFA or advanced degree in a related field
  • 2+ years of relevant experience in financial services or the public sector
  • Alternately, 4+ years of direct experience in the asset area can replace the degree requirement
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong understanding of financial markets and business environment including implications for S&P's analytical products and services.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication skills and a customer-service orientation.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team-oriented, global, and multi-cultural environment
  • Strong verbal communication and writing skills; analytical and problem-solving skills; excellent time management and ability to stay organized, meet deadlines, and multitask;
  • Ability to think independently and critically; and the ability to mentor others.
  • Understanding of FASB and GASB accounting and financial statement analysis
Compensation/Benefits Information (US Applicants Only):

S&P Global states that the anticipated base salary range for this position is $67,600 to $190,100. Base salary ranges may vary by geographic location.

In addition to base compensation, this role is eligible for an annual incentive plan. This role is not eligible for additional compensation such as an annual incentive bonus or sales commission plan.
