The Impact: The Managing Director, Head of In-Business Controls, leads the first line of defense risk operations and controls to support our businesses groups across Technology, Data, Commercial and Analytical and in close partnership with the second line of defense teams and to ensure that Ratings effectively meets its strategic priorities by mitigating and correcting internal risk. - Practice / Department Aligned 1st Line teams
- IBC / Risk Ops
- IBC Reporting / Analytics & Risk / Control Standards
- Vendor / Affiliate Management
The role will lead across key activities such as:
- Partner with Practice and Department leaders and deliver insight to enable appropriate risk-based decision making
- Implement the Internal Control Structure (ICS) across GRS, IT, and the Operating Office
- Partner with 2nd & 3rd line control functions to optimize the 3 lines of defense
- Continuously improve, digitize and automate risk and control processes / operations
- Resolve/remediate risks and findings
- Embed controls into processes and solutions to ensure quality and adherence to regulation and internal policies.
- Instill a risk mind-set into 1st line decision making
- Support Regulatory inquiries / presentations
- Effectively execute the 3rd party Vendor and internal affiliate governance process
- Drive the strategy and execution on operational risk for Ratings to support the second line of defense teams
- Taking the lead from the Business in aligning the priorities of the 2nd and 3rd lines of defense. Within those frameworks executing and constantly improving the risk program.
- Develop leaders across all risk operations functions such they can act autonomously, develop strong, effective teams and serve as the 1st line of defense to support "smart risk" and achieve Ratings priorities
- Build high performing teams that proactively identify operational risk, support the business to design smart processes that address operational risk (including MAP support and RRR findings), design smart controls in line with the Ratings controls framework, build and manage a robust and efficient vendor management and affiliates process in line with Ratings Vendor operating procedures.
- Build strong data analytics, assurance and controls expertise and capabilities within the teams
- Set up and manage effective governance for operational risk, error management and support our management assessment process
- Sponsor and build capabilities within teams to execute effectively with discipline on risk related projects
- Act as a key liaison point between functions critical for governance and execution such as Compliance, Analytical, IT, Technology Product Management. Manage communication with key stakeholders so that they are well informed and engaged in risk related activities
- Work with Senior Leaders to support problem solving and coordination to strengthen our operating risk framework, roles and responsibilities to support execution. Drive solutions to deliver effectively, efficiently and quickly within a smart risk framework and regulated environment
- Develop and execute an aligned talent strategy that includes strategic hiring, capabilities to build a high performing globally distributed team, support career development
- Ensure team operates effectively within the operating office budget
Basic Qualifications:
- Experience in a leadership capacity in an operational area is essential to balance effectiveness, efficiency and operational risk. The role must be able to define and implement operational excellence and lead a distributed global team. Understanding regional, cultural and operating environment differences is essential to developing an effective global approach.
- Undergraduate degree required; MBA, CFA or Graduate Degree preferred
- 15+ years of relevant experience and knowledge of sound practices relating to building and implementing and effective system of internal controls and experience in leading the control efforts for a significant business entity
- The role requires a deep understanding of S&P Global Ratings' business, ideally with experience working across multiple functions. It must be able to engage effectively and credibly with an executive audience.
- Ability to influence and develop strong partnerships with senior leaders in other risk and control functions, including Compliance, Internal Controls, Internal Audit, Enterprise Risk, etc
- Able to convey complex risk topics, including progress of remediation efforts, statuses of issues, etc. to varied audiences (e.g., Ratings Boards, Executive Leaders, Regulators, etc.) with precision and simplicity
- Ability to critically think and frame key risk and business issues / context
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
- Strong judgement / practical risk-to-business mindset; ability to frame and drive trade off decisions
- Strong lean / continuous improvement mindset
- Ability to lead and manage global teams
- S&P Global states that the anticipated base salary range for this position is $227,000 to $306,500. Base salary ranges may vary by geographic location.
