Research Assistant - Commodities - Corporate Ratings Grade 8 (for internal purposes)

The Role: We are currently looking for a motivated candidate to join our Corporate Ratings group as a Research Assistant, based in our London office.

The Research Assistant supports a team of senior analysts responsible for credit ratings of corporate entities within the Commodities sector in EMEA. With the guidance of senior analysts, you support the sector team on its ongoing surveillance of a portfolio of rated corporate issuers. This includes performing fundamental credit analysis, doing financial modelling (cash flows forecasts, capital structure, liquidity), conducting industry research and extracting financial and economic data from source materials and inputting into group applications. With experience, a high performing Research Assistant will prepare credit reports and will be presenting in credit rating committees.
S&P Corporate Ratings offers a supportive, diverse, and collegial work environment with unparalleled exposure to the senior management of large EMEA corporates.

The successful candidate will be comfortable in an environment of continuous improvement and high customer service standards while adhering to established ratings criteria, policies, and procedures.

The Team / Career opportunity:

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a high performing analytical team with very high potential for professional development. The Commodities team is part of the global Corporate Ratings practice, which is the largest practice at S&P Global Ratings.
The team has currently 15 full-time analysts based in London, Paris, Dubai, Moscow, and Stockholm and covers more than 120 corporate credit ratings across Europe and some emerging markets.
We predominantly do ratings surveillance, work on new rating transactions as well as assess the ratings impact of refinancing or M&A transactions applying our core corporate methodology and industry specific rating factors. We also work on transactions in partnership with other practices and segments at S&P Global on a regular basis.

The impact:
The individual will have to demonstrate analytical excellence, be reliable, hardworking, curious, and above all interested both in financial modelling and corporate credit analysis. Effective teamwork and a thoughtful approach to problem solving are highly valued.
Good presentation skills in front of internal and external audiences are required as over the time, the candidate will be expected to participate in meetings with senior management teams to extract and assess information relating to credit quality and to explain our credit rating opinions.

Qualifications/Experience:
  • Be educated to degree level in a relevant business-related field; a relevant Master's degree, CFA or financial qualification would be desirable.
  • Have some a first relevant work experience of about a year, potentially acquired via internships, in at least one of the following areas: (1) Accounting/Audit; (2) Credit Analysis; (3) Modeling Financial forecasts.

  • Knowledge of, or strong interest on, the commodities sector (oil& gas, metals, mining) would be an advantage.
  • Being well organized, reliable, detail orientated; ability to maintain accuracy whilst complying with deadlines. Be proficient at working with financial models
  • The ability to work both independently and within a team environment is critical.
