Mackenzie is committed to meeting the growing demand for sustainable solutions by launching a new investment boutique focused on managing a range of sustainable solutions to meet client needs. The new sustainability-focused investment team is currently recruiting for a Director, ESG Research responsible for delivering ESG fundamental research and expertise to enable an integrated ESG investment process across the team’s mandates. This role reports to the SVP, Portfolio Manager of the team.

Key responsibilities:

  • Conduct fundamental ESG research to identify strengths and weakness of a company’s policies practices, operations and performance that will directly contribute towards security selection within team mandates
  • Take a leadership role in the evaluation of a company’s ability to generate impact for its stakeholders
  • Develop and implement comprehensive shareholder engagement campaigns that address strategic and tactical initiatives across the team’s investment mandates.
  • Identify and provide insight on emerging ESG issues to Mackenzie committees and working groups on the broad implications and potential impacts to fund holdings, and in support of shareholder engagement.
  • Collaborate with Sustainable Investing Research team on corporate priorities such as assessment of climate risks and opportunities and determining ESG materiality.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • 7-10+ years of relevant experience
  • A passion for sustainable investing
  • Inherent curiosity to research, evaluate and educate on the evolving ESG landscape
  • Proven experience conducting comprehensive ESG factor assessments of publicly listed companies
  • Proven ability to develop, articulate and present the strengths and weaknesses of a company culminating in a detailed ESG thesis
  • Proven experience conducting shareholder engagement campaigns that includes dialogue with board and senior executives of target companies, filing shareholder resolutions, and presenting resolutions at corporate AGMs
  • Experience collaborating with proxy voting partners on developing voting guidelines aligned with our mandates
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to showcase ESG analysis and engagement initiatives
  • Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Comfortable working in autonomy with a builder mindset
