The Public Service Pension Plan (Plan) is a defined benefit pension plan established in 1947 for eligible employees of the Government of Alberta, its agencies, boards and commissions.  The Plan has $15 Billion in assets, almost 90,000 members and 28 participating employers. PSPP Corporation is Administrator of the Plan and Trustee of the Plan fund.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Investment Director is responsible for monitoring the services provided by the PSPP Corporation’s legislated investment manager, AIMCo, and analysis of the performance of the Plan fund.  The Investment Director reports on investment performance, investment-risk management and works with the CEO and external service providers to make recommendations to the Board of Directors and its Investment Committee on investment policy and strategy. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with strong institutional investment knowledge who wants to be a champion of the Plan and provide expert level support/advice to stakeholders.

The ideal candidate:

  • At least a University Degree in a related discipline (e.g. Business, Finance, Economics).
  • CFA or similar designation is highly desirable.
  • Advanced knowledge of institutional investment and portfolio management.
  • Specialized knowledge of investment products and services.
  • Advanced knowledge of principles and best practices of investment risk management, ideally in a pension plan environment.
  • Experience analyzing complex pooled investment structures.
  • General knowledge of AIMCo (Alberta Investment Management Corporation) and its structure.
  • Broad understanding of board governance.
  • Experience with pension plan financial management.
  • Broad understanding of defined benefit pension plans.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills (written, verbal and presentation), including explaining complex issues and concepts in plain language to a diverse group of individuals with varying levels of knowledge.
  • Executive-level critical thinking, analysis, and planning to develop solutions and recommendations.
  • Ability to think strategically and creatively about opportunities and challenges, and engage in short, medium and long-range planning.
  • Comfortable providing advice based on independent review and assessment.
  • Ability to build and leverage business relationships.
