POSITION

Wellington is one of the world's largest alternatives managers with $27 billion across risk-seeking, risk-mitigating and diversifying strategies. Aligned with our focus on building and expanding our alternatives capabilities, we are seeking a Research Manager, Alternatives (Research Manager) to support the manager research and allocation effort for alternatives. It is expected that the manager research and factor allocation framework will be a key component of the firm's evolving alternatives platform. Wellington's experienced manager research team is situated within the Fundamental Factor Platform (FFP), a part of Investment Strategy (iStrat), which manages $38 billion in AUM. The FFP team is responsible for multiple alternatives solutions on behalf of clients, ranging from market neutral hedge funds to multi-strategy liquid alternatives. The team also provides bespoke research and advice across various topics such as fundamental factors, manager research, asset allocation, policy and risk management. The Research Manager will complement the Fundamental Factor team by bringing dedicated multi-asset and multi-strategy alternatives expertise.

RESPONSIBILITIES

We are seeking to recruit an experienced researcher with a blend of quantitative and fundamental skills who will be responsible for:
  • Spearheading development of comprehensive alternative solutions and manager research allocation architecture
  • Working side-by-side with alternatives PM allocation team to develop risk-taker evaluation models and a robust, multi-faceted, research platform
  • Creating and implementing factors and skill metrics to help understand risk taker positioning and to enable more efficient processes around allocating capital
  • Researching and designing systematic screens and quantitative models to understand risk-taker performance
  • Collaborating with internal risk team to develop best-in-class stress testing, non-normal measures of risk, and analytics to support the investment process
  • Contributing key input to PM allocation discussion with views on risk, manager allocations, and markets
  • Developing a deep understanding of firm internal investment capabilities and allocator needs
  • Collaborating with alternative PM allocators, manager research, and risk-takers from across our investment platform (macro, fixed income, equity, industry analysis, commodity, derivatives, quantitative and risk) on investment-led projects
  • Contributing to the strong investment culture of the team and the firm; and
  • Driving strong investment results on behalf of clients
QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate should bring 10-15 years of relevant experience from a background with an asset manager, alternatives firm, investment consultancy or sell-side research firm. In addition, the Research Manager, Alternatives should have the following attributes and qualifications:
  • Passion for investing with a proven research process across multi-asset/global macro/equity/fixed income.
  • Significant experience with alternatives investing and quantitatively driven processes; track record of building out proprietary analytics frameworks and processes.
  • A demonstrated ability to:
    • Ramp quickly and deeply in new research areas and rotate to different investment processes as needed
    • Thrive in a multi-faceted, fast-paced environment with multiple competing deadlines
    • Work independently as well as part of a highly collaborative team where respectful debate is encouraged to best deliver client outcomes
  • Essential traits such as intellectual curiosity, versatility, creative problem solving, strong work ethic and attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) which are critical to success in Wellington's collaborative and interactive culture.
  • Required technical skills:
    • Modeling and designing data and architecture to support investment processes
    • Programming in MATLAB/Python
    • Risk Systems (Barra, Axioma, Bloomberg)
    • Visualization software (e.g. Spotfire)
  • A history of academic achievement; advanced degree in a quantitative field (finance, economics, mathematics, physical sciences, or statistics) and CFA or CAIA charter are preferred.
