PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Understand, evaluate, and interpret various industry standards/systems in consideration of sustainable investing disciplines and decisions.
• Provide input, research, and technical analysis related to the investment materiality and relevance of ESG issues as they relate to the WSIB's investment strategies and corporate governance processes.
• Partner with the WSIB's investment teams and be part of the Investment Committee to develop suitable mapping and measurement standards for ESG factors deemed relevant to investment decision-making over time.
• Work with organizations that are refining and/or consolidating effective ESG standards/metrics systems that align with WSIB investment disciplines.
• Prepare written materials for and make oral presentations to the Board and its Committees.
• Educate and brief Board members and staff on the state of ESG related disciplines that are most relevant and suitable to the WSIB's investments and in the interest of WSIB beneficiaries.
• Support with data and facts the WSIB external position on ESG related issues, especially when issues may impact on the WSIB's reputation.
• Support and help inform government affairs initiatives (state and federal) or regulatory efforts that involve ESG issues.
• Speak at industry events to represent WSIB's point of view and thought leadership on ESG issues.
• Develop and publish the WSIB's annual Investment Sustainability Report to communicate ESG related investment data and approaches to key issues.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor's degree in business, finance, economics, or fields closely related to investment management and analysis.
• Five years' experience with a direct role in one or more of these areas: analyzing or managing capital markets and/or investment portfolios, investment risk management and/or issues management, managing corporate governance issues as integral to an organization's fiduciary duty.

The strongest candidate will possess:
• Adaptability - A blend of technical knowledge and emotional intelligence.
• Analytical Skills - The ability to clearly analyze investment materiality vs. ideological issues as part of an investment discipline and in context of broad, public fiduciary duty.
• Knowledge of Asset Management - Working knowledge or experience related to portfolio management, asset allocation, investment analysis, planning and strategy. Certification or a level of achievement from the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) program is highly desirable. Familiarity with current and emerging sustainability standards is desirable.
• Communications Skills - Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills are essential. The Sustainability Officer will prepare written and oral presentations to the Board and its Committees as well as represent the WSIB at industry events and publish an annual Investment Sustainability Report.
• Forward Thinking - The ability to look beyond where we are, to where we need to be, while being a patient strategist and a nimble planner.
• Networking & Interpersonal Skills - The Sustainability Officer will be an alliance builder and a network connector for the WSIB within the industry.
• Resiliency - The ability to learn from mistakes and criticism, and a willingness to partner constructively and dynamically when team members sort through differing views on potentially contentious issues.
