About Ohio Public Employees Retirement SystemWith assets of $88.6 billion as of 12/31/13, OPERS is the largest state pension fund in Ohio, and the 11th largest public retirement system and15th largest retirement system in the U.S. OPERS is located in the heart of downtown Columbus -- Ohio's capital city -- just blocks from The Ohio Statehouse and Capital Square.OPERS, which recognized its 75th year in 2010, provides retirement, disability and survivor benefit programs for public employees throughout the state who are not covered by another state or local retirement system. OPERS serves more than 1 million members:OPERS offers 3 retirement plans to new employees: a defined benefit plan, a defined contribution plan and a combined plan. All employees prior to 1998 are in a defined benefit paln. Over time OPERS must have sufficient funds to meet all our liabilities. Our sources of income are employee and employer contributions as well as investment income. All funds are placed in income-producing investments, and over 90 percent of the assets are managed internally. The investment department is currently comprised of 50 professional staff consisting of research assistants, analysts, traders, and portfolio managers. Investment areas include international equities, real estate, global bonds, domestic equities and private equities.We currently have over 550 employees.
